CNN —House Speaker Mike Johnson is moving forward with a legislative package to provide aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan. Georgia Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene has been beating the drums to vote Johnson, who is himself also an extreme right-wing Republican, out of office. When GOP House members adopted this lower threshold in exchange for accepting McCarthy, experts understood that the rule would create extreme instability within the Republican caucus. On July 28, 2015, Tea Party Republican Rep. Mark Meadows from North Carolina filed a motion to vacate but the House never voted on the resolution. The time of Republican speakership keeps shrinking as right-wing ousters have become increasingly common.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump is starting to struggle under the weight of multiple legal cases against him. His leadership political action committee, Save America, spent nearly $5.6 million in legal fees in February alone. And while the super PAC Maga Inc. has refunded nearly all of that money, that’s money that could have been used for Trump’s campaign. According to recent Federal Election Commission filings, the president had $71 million in available cash in his principal campaign account at the end of February, compared to Trump’s campaign, which reported $33.5 million. It’s likely that big-ticket supporters would rather back a campaign for the next president than fund a collective bailout.

CNN —Mitch McConnell has bowed to political reality and announced that he is relinquishing his role as leader of Senate Republicans. (Chao served as transportation secretary under former President Donald Trump, before quitting the post following the January 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol.) The anti-Trump coalition within the Republican Party is small and hanging on by a thread, and there is little chance of that changing in the short term. Now, one of Haley’s most generous benefactors, the conservative political action committee Americans for Prosperity, funded by the Koch network, has withdrawn its funds. And now, like other Trump opponents, Romney finds himself heading for the exit at the end of his current term.

CNN —Michigan provided the first test of President Joe Biden’s coalition in swing states Tuesday night. In a campaign that will likely come down to a handful of swing states, Biden can’t afford to make the mistakes that Hillary Clinton made in 2016, when small numbers of votes cost her the presidency. Some of the uncommitted voters are sending a message to President Biden rather than going all in and threatening to follow through on Election Day by voting against Biden. Voting uncommitted in February 2024 is not the same as voting for Donald Trump in November 2024. In 2024, the cost of President Biden failing to make a compelling case to his progressive coalition will be a second term for Donald Trump.

As president, Trump experienced more moments that would traditionally be defined as a scandal than almost any other high official in recent memory, arguably surpassing his notorious predecessor, Richard Nixon. In an era when most Americans are more concerned about the political party of their children’s future spouse than their religion, this calculation is dominant. One study even found that legislators often raise more money after a scandal, especially if the issue received media coverage. CNN —Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley is finally unleashing on her opponent, former President Donald Trump. Although she spent much of her time during the Iowa caucuses and New Hampshire primary focused on Florida Gov. The poll ahead of the February 24 South Carolina primary shows Trump holds a sizeable 26-point lead over Haley in the state. Haley’s best bet is that by ramping up the intensity of her attacks, she can remain in the political game. Voters in primary states who hate Trump and like her will give her enough of a vote to remain relevant.

CNN —Democrats should not make the mistake of underestimating former President Donald Trump. Moreover, they note, Haley was able to win independent voters who theoretically would be more amenable to President Joe Biden than Trump in the fall. Moreover, the number of Republicans who keep saying they won’t vote for Trump under any circumstances, gives Democrats hope that on Election Day, many voters in the GOP won’t turn out. But these arguments downplay the threat Trump will pose to Biden in November by ignoring several fundamentals. Trump is succeeding even though the United States has never had a major presidential candidate saddled with so much legal baggage.

“My fellow Americans, our long national nightmare is over,” President Gerald Ford said. “Our campaign is the last best hope of stopping the Trump-Biden nightmare,” the former UN ambassador said. If not, it won’t be as protracted a “national nightmare” as the two-year-long Watergate scandal that put Gerald Ford in the Oval Office. Though, depending on your point of view, the real nightmare could begin after the swearing-in. CNN —Former President Donald Trump is a cultural phenomenon. Ambassador Nikki Haley and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, have been unable to shake the loyalty of voters to Trump. To understand Trump, however, it is also important to recognize that he has become a cultural phenomenon within large swaths of the GOP. To be sure, Trump is not the first president to command strong cultural currency with voters that goes beyond traditional political attachments. Yet there is no president who has devoted the same kind of attention to marketing himself as a cultural phenomenon as Trump.

It is a feat former President Donald Trump is trying to duplicate this year. The first true test of Trump’s comeback occurs Monday in Iowa, where caucusgoers will venture into sub-zero temperatures to choose between Trump, Florida Gov. After months of speculation, we’ll finally get some answers to a few questions: Is there an opening for any Republican aside from Trump? Most of our contributors thought Haley won Wednesday’s CNN debate in Iowa against DeSantis, but Trump’s absence from the stage again loomed large. “Haley sounded like someone looking to take on the genuine article — the Republican frontrunner,” wrote W.
